Publication date: Wed, 06/24/2009

Employees at The Bellingham Herald in WA state will have to take a 1-week unpaid furlough this summer to help the paper cut expenses. The newspaper is also cutting 30 positions -- 25 of those will go when the Herald is printed on a press in Mt. Vernon, starting in Aug. After the cuts the Herald will employ 75 people. Publisher Glen Nardi announced the latest actions in response to a continued economic slowdown. Last week the paper sold its building in downtown Bellingham for $2.35M.
