Val Verde Unified School District trustees recently will authorize layoffs and the elimination of 62 classified positions across the district. District officials say the sudden cuts are necessary because the state is demanding that Val Verde pay $12.5 million in a construction money dispute. The cuts will include 18 community liaisons, 15 custodians and 10 security guards. Sixty-two positions will equal about 8 percent of the district's classified work force. The district counted 735 employees during the previous school year. The Val Verde district stretches from portions of Perris and Moreno Valley into Mead Valley and other unincorporated points west of Interstate 215.
