More than 200 Billings teachers and guidance counselors will be laid off, but officials hope to rehire most, if not all, of them soon. School District trustees voted unanimously to notify the district's 206 non-tenured educators that their contracts won't be automatically renewed June 1. The move came at a special meeting, as board members struggle with a $2.7 million shortfall in the district's elementary budget. State law requires public school districts to tell non-tenured teachers by June 1 if their contracts will not be renewed.
