The Port Authority of Allegheny County will eliminate 374 positions, a move that will require the organization to lay off 267 employees when service cuts go into effect. The Port Authority board last month approved a plan to cut bus and light-rail service by 15 percent effective June 17, to trim a projected $80 million budget deficit for fiscal 2008, which begins July 1. Recently, the Port Authority said those service cuts will require it to cut budgeted positions for 203 bus and light-rail operators, 118 other union support jobs and 53 nonunion positions. Because not all of those positions are filled, the cuts will result in layoffs of 138 operators, 113 union support workers and 16 nonunion staff, the authority said. The cuts leave the Port Authority with a projected $45 million deficit and officials said more cuts will be made in September if officials cannot find more revenue by then.
