A BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina subsidiary is cutting 72 jobs in Florence and Horry counties, but many of the employees will be able to move into unfilled or new positions elsewhere in the company, a spokesman said. The Columbia-based health insurer's PGBA subsidiary, which handles benefits for the military and private Medicare plans, notified the S.C. Commerce Department of potential layoffs after it lost one of its contracts related to private Medicare claims. The contract loss affects 49 of PGBA's 1,378 jobs in Florence and 23 of its 784 jobs in Surfside Beach.
