The MetroHealth System: MetroHealth Medical Center plans to lay off 73 people and eliminate other currently vacant positions to reduce costs by about $17 million. The 73 employees were notified recently. The layoffs are slightly more than 1 percent of the MetroHealth system's employees, who number about 6,600. The moves are in response to the hospital's first-quarter loss of $8 million. The hospital system lost $6 million for all of last year.
Olin Corporation: Olin Corp. is moving a military ammunition packaging unit from its East Alton plant and laying off 87 workers, the latest in a series of changes for the company. A company spokeswoman says the move will be done in several phases. The final decision was made in February. The Clayton, Missouri-based company notified officials with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity earlier this month that it is moving operations to Oxford, Mississippi.
Waterloo Industries Inc.: Waterloo Industries has temporarily laid off 100 of its workers, said a company spokesman. The manager of human resources said the tool box manufacturer had about 70 employees volunteer for the layoff. An additional 30 employees were furloughed involuntarily. He said Waterloo's temporary workers were also released, but that is a "small" number of workers, less than 20. Because the layoff is temporary, the Workforce Development Board of Western Missouri Inc. will not activate its Rapid Response Team. The team provides retraining, employment placement, resume writing, on-the-job training, transportation and child care.
