General Motors Corp. is cutting 350 temporary workers at its assembly plant in Moraine, south of Dayton. The plant is slated to be closed by GM sometime by 2010 as part of the company's restructuring that includes a move away from the trucks and SUVs that are built in Moraine and towards the more fuel-efficient small-car market. Because of the number of permanent workers who took buyouts or early retirements, the company did not have enough workers to handle the increase in production related to filling the back orders. The workers had known up front that the positions would be short-term, said a GM spokeswoman. She confirmed about 350 temporary workers losing their jobs, not 450 as reported in other news stories.
