Kordsa, an industrial yarn producer in Hixson has laid off 55 workers. The employees were laid off as of recently. The layoffs were the result of replacing obsolescent equipment with newer machines that needed fewer workers, as well as a loss in business from foreign competition. The company now has 260 workers, not counting contractors working on specific projects. The company makes industrial yarn that is used in heavy-duty tires for earth movers and other construction equipment, as well as tractors and other farm equipment, mining conveyor belts, automotive serpentine belts and radiator hoses, plus other devices.
