Rockwell Collins is asking for 80 Iowa production employees to take voluntary layoffs and is delaying about 200 engineering hires in response to the Boeing strike. Members of the Machinists Union went on strike Saturday at Boeing. Chicago-based Boeing is the world's largest aerospace company. The machinists struck Boeing in response to concerns about the company's desire to use more contract workers to perform tasks previously performed by machinists, and other issues. Rockwell Collins is a major Boeing supplier. Its relationships with Boeing include supplying the largest percentage of the cockpit electronics on Boeing's next-generation 787 Dreamliner, which is entering production. In addition, Rockwell Collins is realigning its staff in production. The changes will include a reduction in the use of overtime and a reduction in the number of production positions. The staffing reductions will be achieved through attrition, leaving positions vacant that come open through retirements or job changes, and temporary layoffs for employees who volunteer to accept them.
