General Motors Corporation: Layoffs and shift adjustments will be in full swing in 2008 at General Motors' Flint Truck Assembly Plant. The big new news is that about 500 hourly workers on the plant's medium-duty truck production line will be laid off, due to a soft market. Orders for the medium-duty commercial trucks, a classic barometer of the overall health of the U.S. economy, have been down. For years, the Flint truck plant has been running full tilt, even scheduling some unusual double-time shifts, to meet demand. But high gas prices and other economic issues have dented big pickup truck sales.
