The Honolulu Advertiser is cutting 51 positions from its staff in the fourth round of buyouts or layoffs at the newspaper in 16 months. The cuts are part of a nationwide effort by the Gannett Co., Inc., owner of the Advertiser and 89 other daily newspapers, to eliminate more than 3,000 jobs, 10 percent of its workforce, by the end of the year. The Advertiser’s president and publisher said in a note to employees recently that 41 people took a voluntary buyout and 10 additional workers were laid off. The note didn't say where the cuts occurred. At least eight newsroom staff members are leaving.
