Fraser Papers Inc. said recently it's shutting down three paper machines and eliminating about 135 jobs at its Madawaska mill as part of a plan aimed at saving $14 million a year. Fraser will shift production of specialty paper from the two oldest machines to six remaining machines, the company said. The outdated machines, which employ about 100 people, will be shut down soon. A previously announced shutdown of the groundwood coating line that took effect recently will result in another 29 employees losing their jobs permanently. The Madawaska facility employs about 825 workers and uses eight machines to produce a variety of papers.
