Dallas Independent School District laid off 63 people recently from the district's central office, according to The Dallas Morning News and WFAA-TV (Channel 8). The Superintendent didn't need board approval for the layoffs as the positions are considered "at-will" employees who were working without contracts. The 63 layoffs were among a total of 160 positions eliminated at headquarters, according to the DMN. The staff eliminations are expected to save the district up to $3.6 million in the current school year, according to a DISD news release posted on The Dallas Morning News web site from the district's press office. More than 600 positions are expected to be eliminated. The district is grappling with a $64 million budget shortfall that is attributed, in part, to a miscalculation of average teacher salaries in the district.
