Orange County's chief probation officer plans to lay off 58 workers and eliminate almost half the beds at a juvenile camp to close an $8 million budget gap. The Probation Chief said a rules change cut federal funding in half while the department's original budget anticipated more savings from worker attrition that did not occur. Union officials and about 1,000 county workers also marched on the Board of Supervisors' office recently to complain about layoffs and call for oversight of the county's fiscal policies. The Orange County Employees Association also announced that layoff notices for 210 social service workers that were scheduled to be sent.
