The city of Rochester intends to eliminate between 20 and 75 government jobs to help close an estimated $18 million budget shortfall, the mayor said recently. The actual number of layoffs will likely end up at around 40 to 50, about half of previous estimates that would have saved the city more than $3 million, Mayor Robert Duffy said in an interview with public broadcasting station WXXI-TV. His decision means there will be deeper reductions in city services, including property inspections. Duffy, a Democrat, said he's hoping to avoid tax increases but said he cannot completely rule out a property tax hike.
