The Charlotte Observer will cut 75 jobs, or more than 9 percent of its work force. According to the newspaper's web site, affected employees will be offered buyouts. It is the third time in five months the Observer has announced layoffs, citing the economic downturn and competition. The Observer has 810 full-time employees, the web site says. Of those, 200 work in the newsroom. The paper cites the Publisher as saying the Observer also will seek to reduce other expenses. She didn't provide details, and she couldn't be reached for further comment. Fellow McClatchy Co. newspaper The News & Observer of Raleigh, also announced more buyouts recently.
