Publication date: Mon, 07/23/2007

Capistrano Unified trustees approved a budget recently that gives the district a rare surplus for 2007-08, but cuts about 30 teaching positions and dozens of other jobs throughout all levels of district operations. More than 100 full-time equivalent positions were eliminated, out of about 4,700 district jobs. The layoffs include about 22 regular teaching positions across the grade levels and about eight special education teachers, which will increase class sizes for some students. Dozens of part-time special education aides. An assistant principal at each high school, leaving the schools with three assistant principals each. Sixteen management positions and eight other positions in the district office. Four custodians and five substitute teachers.
