American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. is continuing to cut the workforce at its Buffalo gear and axle plant that is being idled by year's end. The United Auto Workers union, which represented about 650 hourly workers when 2007 began, estimates that the departure of about 430 production workers this year has left 220 at the plant. Of that number, 100 to 140 are departing soon. The move is blamed on a loss of business from General Motors Corp., the company's major customer. American Axle's other area operations, a Town of Tonawanda forge plant and a Cheektowaga machining facility, are not involved.
