BMW cuts 850 jobs at Mini plant in UK after production overhaul

BMW on Monday abruptly laid off 850 workers and scaled down production at its British factory which builds the Mini car, an effort to adjust to weaker demand. The job cuts follow a review of operations at the factory in Cowley, near Oxford, where production will be suspended throughout this week and staff who currently work weekend shifts will be moved to weekday work, effective March 2. "I've never been sick, I've never missed work and they tell me one hour before my shift that I have been sacked. That's not on. That's why people are angry & so upset with BMW and with the union," Fernandes told the BBC," said Silvia Fernandes, one of the laid-off workers.
