Newspaper publisher GateHouse Media is temporarily cutting the salaries for most of its 1,500 employees in New England an average of nearly 8% to save money & avoid job cuts. CEO Rick Daniels says the recession's hurt ad revenue at its newspapers in MA & CT. He says salary reductions, ranging from 7% to 15% & are expected to save the company $2.5M & 100 jobs. Salaries can be reinstated next year. Fairport, NY-based GateHouse is also trying to negotiate salary cuts with unionized employees at The Patriot Ledger of Quincy, The Enterprise of Brockton & Herald News of Fall River. GateHouse reported a $673 million net loss last year.
