Nationwide Jobs Openings Up 40.9% Y-O-Y Per U.S. Employment Outlook Report

Job openings are up significantly year-over-year across the U.S. according to the January, 2014 U.S. Employment Outlook report complied and released by Simply Hired.

In December, 2013, nationwide job openings were up 40.9% year-over-year, but decreased 4% month-over-month.

By industry sector, job openings increased in seven out of eighteen industries month-over-month in December 2013, with agriculture (32.8%) and manufacturing (14.3%) showing the largest gains. Media (-11.6%), transportation (-11.4%) and retail (-9.1%) industries saw a decrease during this period.

A small number of occupation categories (three out of twenty-three) experienced growth in job openings in December 2013. Law enforcement, fire and security (15.3%) roles experienced the largest growth month-over-month. However, military (-11.5%) and retail (-11.5%) roles faced the largest decline in December 2013.

Healthcare continues as industry with greatest job inventory. More than one-third of the companies with heavy job posting volume in December 2013 were healthcare-related, making healthcare the top industry for job postings. There were also a significant number of job openings at academic institutions and in management consulting.

The U.S. Employment Outlook is a monthly analysis and forecast of employment trends in the United States based on job posting activity on the job aggregator SimplyHired publishes job postings from 30,000+ employment sites. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is also analyzed for the preparation of this report.
