More Data From Pew Internet On How Users Are Using Their Cell Phones

Smartphones are getting more sophisticated with a new array of capabilities, but according to newest Pew Internet study of cell phone activities in the first part of 2013, SMS/text messaging still tops the list of most popular activities.

The study of 2,000+ adults, conducted in April and May of this year, asked about various activities. The top activities are:

  • 81% of cell phone owners text
  • 60% browse the internet
  • 52% read and answer email
  • 50% download apps
  • 49% get directions, recommendations, or some other type of location-based information
  • 48% listen to music
  • 21% do video calls or chat
  • 8% “check in” or share their location
