Shaker Shares

Shaker Shares, the philanthropic outreach program established by the Shaker Foundation, empowers Shaker employees to give back to the community and raise money for good causes. Every month, Shaker employees identify a charity and the funds raised through participating in fun Shaker Shares-sponsored activities go to the charities of the month. The Shaker Foundation matches all monies raised by Shaker employees.

In the month of February, Shaker supported the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which provides the majority of food for all the food pantries in the Chicagoland area. Shaker employees sorted, stacked, stretched, strained, and managed to have a good time while packing food for over 600 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters served by the Food Depository. The Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food to almost a half-million people every year.

Shaker sponsored its first Chili Cooking Contest with employees who volunteered crockpots full of their favorite chili recipes. Employees had the opportunity to taste the different chilies and vote for their favorite. Funds normally spent on lunch were also donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

In March, Shaker supported Chicago-based House of the Good Shepherd, a shelter for battered women and their children dedicated to ending the cycle of domestic violence in families.

The April Charity of the Month was Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, a long-term residential home for troubled young men and women.

Shaker hosts

Shaker was honored to host an onsite assembly for the National Association of African-Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR) on March 22nd. Mike Temkin, Vice President, Strategic Planning and Development, and Joe Shaker, Jr., Director, Media Initiatives presented, "Beyond Job Boards: Using the Internet to Recruit Quality Active and Impulsive Job Seeker."

Temkin and Shaker focused on effective new online advertising options that can be used for recruitment, and explored how these new tactics enable employers to advertise to target audiences in a strategic and cost-efficient manner. These online advertising outlets and newly emerging media include social networking, blogs, podcasts and mobile devices - which enable a company's employment message to be seen not only where candidates begin their job search, but also where they go to find information about vocational and personal interests.

NAAAHR's mission is to increase the presence of African-American professionals – at all levels, in all industries and throughout all regions.
